Follow Live: Hospital Twitters Father-Son Kidney Operation

Monday, May 18, 2009

DALLAS —  A North Texas toddler is getting a much-needed kidney from his father Monday morning, and for the first time ever, the hospital is going to "tweet" via Twitter live from the operating room.

Three-year-old John Gilbreath is receiving the kidney from his dad Chris, who is a firefighter in Sherman, Texas.

Chris' surgery is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. The kidney will be transferred to John starting at 8:30 a.m.

Dr. Dev Desai will perform the transplant, but will not be the one "tweeting" during the operation. Instead, a nurse will describe what is going on to another person on a computer. Twitter followers will be able to log in for real time microblogging of what is happening in the operating room.

Desai says this concept serves two purposes. It's a way to communicate with the family so they know what is going on in the operating room and it raises awareness of organ donation.
