REFORM, Ala. —  An Alabama mother and her infant son were killed when their vehicle was swept away by floodwaters in the western part of the state.

Alabama state troopers said the tragic accident happened Tuesday night just after 8 p.m. near Reform near the Mississippi border.

Troopers said the victims were 27-year-old Crystal Vaughn and her unidentified 18-month-old son.

Investigators said Vaughn, a resident of Gordo, was driving on a rural road when a culvert burst and swept her vehicle downstream.

Troopers said a second vehicle was also submerged, but both occupants managed to get out of the car. One of them was treated at a Tuscaloosa hospital and released.

Drenching rains on Monday and Tuesday prompted a series of flash flood warnings in several West Alabama counties.
