Hundreds of teenage boys were arrested in Cairo Wednesday for flirting, as Egyptian police conducted a day-long crackdown on sexual harassment, Agence-France Presse reported Thursday.

"We have arrested a large number of boys who were flirting with girls," Cairo Police Director Faruq Lashin told AFP.

About 400 teens, between the ages of 15 and 17, are expected to receive fines when they are brought before a judge. The crackdown targeted teenagers hanging out in front of high schools, universities and along the banks of the Nile, AFP reported.

Sexual harassment convictions in Egypt are rare. The country does not have a law defining sexual harassment, and women's rights groups have long campaigned against it in Cairo.

However, a Cairo court sentenced a teenager Monday to a year in jail for sexually assaulting two women. A 17-year-old is also facing the same charge.

In addition, a man was sentenced to three years in jail in October for groping a woman.
