SURPRISE, Ariz. —  Two people were seriously injured after their car was struck by a freight train on the northwest side of the Phoenix metropolitan area.

The Surprise Police Department says a preliminary investigation shows that the driver either tried to go under the crossing arms or around them as the arms were coming down Friday morning.

The victims, both said to be senior citizens, were extricated from their demolished Cadillac and airlifted to a Phoenix hospital.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Dysart Road and Grand Avenue.
