SARASOTA, Fla. —  A plane carrying Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has safely made an emergency landing in the southwest part of the state.

A news release says the plane experienced mechanical problems Tuesday afternoon and landed in Sarasota. The aircraft recently underwent service for a generator malfunction, but details of the latest problem were not immediately known.

Crist was flying from Bushnell in the central part of the state south to Miami for a news conference. There he was expected to announce a revised deal between the state and the nation's largest producer of cane sugar to buy farmland for Everglades restoration.

The news conference has been rescheduled for Wednesday.
