RIYADH, Saudi Arabia —  The official Saudi Press Agency says authorities beheaded a Saudi man convicted of fatally shooting another man during a dispute.

The agency quotes an Interior Ministry statement saying that Khaled Bin Abdul-Aziz al-Baze'ei was executed Sunday in the eastern city of Qatif.

Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam under which people convicted of murder, drug trafficking, rape and armed robbery can be executed — usually with a sword.

Sunday's execution brings to 82 the number of people beheaded this year in the kingdom, according to an Associated Press count.

Last year, 137 people were beheaded, up from 38 in 2006.
