A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Kyrgyzstan Sunday, rattling nearly 22 miles of the Central Asian landscape, the Reuters news agency reported.

The quake hit near the borders of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, about 35 miles east of Sary-Tash at about 10:00 p.m. local time, Reuters reported.

Initial reports cited the magnitude as 6.9, but later reported it at 6.3, Reuters said.

Earthquakes with a magnitude over 6 are considered strong by the U.S. Geological Survey and are capable of severe damage, Reuters said.

An aftershock with a magnitude of 5.7 was also recorded, Reuters reported.

The extent of the damage and injuries was unknown Sunday afternoon.
