A new tropical depression formed in the Atlantic Ocean Monday as Hurricane Gustav battered the Gulf Coast and Tropical Storm Hanna hit the Bahamas and threatened the eastern shore of the U.S.

The depression could become Tropical Storm Ike, the ninth tropical storm of the season, if it reaches sustained windspeeds of 39 mph. The depression currently has wind speeds of 35 mph, and is expected to become a tropical storm later Monday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The depression, 1470 miles east of the Leeward Islands, was moving west at about 16 mph, the Hurricane Center said at 11 a.m. EDT. It could grow to a tropical storm later Monday.
