Brazilian Au Pair to Plead Not Guilty to Death of Newborn Son, Abuse of Corpse

Thursday, August 21, 2008

HARRISBURG, Pa. —  A defense attorney says a Brazilian woman working as an au pair for a suburban Harrisburg family will plead not guilty to charges in the death of her infant son.

Authorities say 24-year-old Ana Cuoco told police that she delivered the baby herself and he wasn't breathing, so she wrapped the body in a towel and hid it in a closet.

Dauphin County Coroner Graham Hetrick says the baby was at or near full term and had air in his lungs.

Cuoco is charged with concealing a death and abuse of a corpse. Lower Paxton Township police say more charges could be filed depending on the coroner's ruling of the cause of death.

Attorney Angelo Carbone told the Patriot-News of Harrisburg through a Portuguese translator that his client "didn't know what she was doing."

Carbone also says he plans to seek a reduction in her $100,000 bail.
