Deputy Shot, Suspected Gunman Dead After Standoff Near Georgia Elementary School

A suspected gunman is dead and a sheriff's deputy injured after a standoff just two blocks from an elementary school in Georgia.

Police dispatched units to the area after witnesses reported seeing a man armed with a large handgun, according to MyFOXAtlanta.

An off-duty police officer spotted and approached the suspect and the man pointed a gun at him before running off into his nearby trailer home.

Sheriff's office officials told MyFOXAtlanta that they unsuccessfully tried to negotiate with the suspect, then tried using gas to get him out of the home before he opened fire on them.

The suspect and a deputy were both shot and transported to different hospitals, MyFOXAtlanta reported.

The suspect, identified as 65-year-old Herbert Tate died, died shortly after arriving at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Sgt. Kiley Sargent said
