Original TV 'Catwoman': Angelina Jolie Would Be Perfect in the Part

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Julie Newmar, who starred as the Catwoman in the original "Batman" TV series, thinks Angelina Jolie "would own the part," she tells the New York Daily News.

The actress, 74, said that her industry friends tell her Jolie has made "inquiries about the role. I can understand how it would pique her interest. Catwoman is Batman's one true love.

"She's tremendously popular with women because she's both a heroine and a villainess. When you look at the staggering box office of this current film, which actress wouldn't want to jump in?"

However, "The Dark Knight" writers Jonathan Nolan and David Goyer said recently that they are, for now, inclined not to bring back the role of Catwoman for the current franchise.

Newmar was diagnosed with a neuromuscular disorder called Charcot-Marie-Tooth about six months ago, which has slowly inhibited her ability to walk. However, the actress, a devout Christian Scientist, has stayed positive depite her diagnosis.

"If I'm out in public, I grab on to some charming, darling fellow who can steady me. I've been encouraged by the many men who have offered me their shoulders."
