Matt Grant, the English financier featured on "The Bachelor: London Calling," has split from fiancée Shayne Lamas, the couple tells People in a statement.

"We tried hard to make it work but we realized that we were both heading in different directions. We truly care about each other and will remain close friends."

Grant, 27, chose Lamas, 22, an actress and the daughter of Lorenzo Lamas, on the show's season finale in May, where he presented her with the final rose before proposing with a 2.85-carat platinum and diamond ring.

The short relationship was plagued with reports of trouble, and though Grant told People in June that he was still engaged, he moved out of Lamas' apartment to get some "space."
