Judge: Teen Will Stand Trial in 'Mortal Kombat' Death

Thursday, July 24, 2008

GREELEY, Colo. —  A teenager will stand trial in death of a 7-year-old girl who police say was beaten during a re-enactment of a violent video game.

Lamar Roberts is charged in the death of Zoe Garcia. Police say she was kicked, hit, and slammed to the floor during an imitation of the "Mortal Kombat" video game while Roberts and girlfriend Heather Trujillo baby-sat the child on Dec. 6, 2007, in Johnstown. Trujillo is Garcia's half-sister.

A Weld County judge ruled Wednesday there is enough evidence for Roberts to stand trial.

Trujillo was sentenced to 18 years in prison in July after pleading guilty to child abuse-negligently causing death. Her prison sentence may be suspended if she successfully completes six years in a Youthful Offender System program.
