A drunk driver slammed into the vehicle Police Officer Paul Oelrich had just pulled over during a routine traffic stop in Burnsville, Minn.

Oelrich was hit by flying debris and thrown into a ditch, according to MyFOX Twin Cities. The person behind the wheel, 30-year-old Devin Halden, was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence in the July 11 incident.

The crash is the eighth of its kind in the last two-and-a-half years and has Minnesota authorities fuming over the problem of drivers hitting squad cars and other vehicles during police stops.

"Pay attention to the roadway. Pay attention to what's happening in front of you. If you see those squad cars on the side of the road, move over," said Burnsville Police Chief Robert Hawkins during a Wednesday press conference addressing the issue.

The Move Over Law, created after Minnesota State Trooper Ted Foos was killed in a similar incident, requires drivers to shift lanes away from any emergency vehicle stopped on a road with two or more lanes going in one direction.

Police say far too many motorists are ignoring the regulation and driving dangerously close to parked squad cars.
