Girl Kicked Out of Tennis Tournament After Dad Gives Instructions Through Hidden Earpiece

Thursday, July 24, 2008

An 8-year-old girl was kicked out of a tennis tournament in New Zealand after officials discovered her father was giving her instructions through a hidden earpiece, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.

Tournament referee Rob Wilkinson said that he and other officials became suspicious when they noticed Anastasiya Korzh making a "heightened degree of questioned calls." They decided to disqualify her from the junior tennis tournament when a wire was found in her headband.

Her father Demetri argues that he was not helping his daughter cheat, but was merely helping her keep score.

"It was obvious girls were taking advantage of Ana because she was playing for the first time," he told New Zealand newspaper The Press. "I was trying to help my child and there was a miscommunication. It is like she has been punished twice."

The earpiece was linked by a cord to a receiver under her shirt, and her father spoke to her through a transmitter on the sideline. When Anastasia's earpiece was discovered, Korzh took it off his daughter, but officials still disqualified her.
