Man Rescued From Gas Well Shaft in Texas

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

CRESSON, Texas —  Emergency personnel today rescued a man who fell about 40 feet into a narrow gas well shaft in Johnson County.

The accident happened at a site near Cresson, about 25 miles south of Fort Worth.

The man spent about three hours in the slim shaft before being extricated.

He was placed in an ambulance for transport to a hospital.

His condition wasn't immediately available.

A Johnson County sheriff's official says the man was wedged into the 14-inch-by-18-inch shaft. Corporal Pam Jetsel says the shaft is 60 feet to 80 feet deep. She says five area fire departments responded to the accident scene in Cresson, about 25 miles south of Fort Worth.

Jetsel says an emergency call came in about 8 a.m. Tuesday.
