Sen. Hatch Reaches Across the Aisle With Tribute Song to Sen. Kennedy

Thursday, July 17, 2008

In a rare show of across-the-aisle support in a polarized Congress, Sen. Orrin Hatch, a staunch conservative Republican from Utah, reached out with a song written for Sen. Ted Kennedy, a steadfast Massachusetts liberal who is recovering from a cancer operation.

The Boston Globe reports that Democratic colleagues asked Hatch, already an author of hundreds of patriotic-themed songs, to write a tribute song to Kennedy for the Democratic Convention in August.

The ballad "Headed home" was born, which the paper notes Hatch cannot get through without becoming emotional.

Both veteran senators have a history of putting political differences aside for each other and had kind words for each other. Hatch calls Kennedy a "special person," and Kennedy says Hatch is "like a brother to me."
