WASHINGTON —  U.S. Sen. John Warner, R-Va., was admitted to a hospital so doctors could make adjustments to a pacemaker they implanted days earlier.

According to a statement on Warner's Web site, he planned to be admitted to Inova Fairfax Hospital in suburban Virginia Tuesday night for the procedure.

Warner's statement said the pacemaker was implanted on Saturday. Although he voted on the Senate floor Tuesday, his statement said he plans to be absent for the rest of the week.

Warner, 81, had a procedure to correct an atrial fibrillation last year.

The five-term senator announced last year he would not seek re-election in 2008. He said then he felt spry enough for the Senate but thought it wise not to push it another six years.
