A Brazilian company claims to have unlocked Apple’s new iPhone 3G, which would make it the first to have hacked the device to free it from restrictions forcing users to sign up for calling plans with select carriers, AFP reported on Tuesday.
The Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reported that the firm, DesbloqueioBr, altered a computer program in the phone and used a special add-on to the SIM chip, which stores the subscriber’s identity, to unlock the iPhone.
The company plans to charge users between $250 and $375 to unlock their phones, but Apple can thwart the hack with an update to the software, AFP reported.
"It's going to be a game of cat-and-mouse," DesbloqueioBr partner Breno MacMasi said in the AFP story.
