One of the hottest-selling cars in America will soon be built in one of the hottest states in the nation.

Toyota announcing today that they plan to produce the Prius at a new plant under construction in Blue Springs, Mississippi. This will mark the first time that the world’s best-selling hybrid will be manufactured outside of Japan. Currenly, global Prius production is consolidated at two facilities in Toyota’s home country.

The move comes in the wake of a shakeup of Toyota’s American manufacturing structure as the company scales back on full-size truck production to concentrate on more efficient cars and crossover vehicles. The company recently announced that they will be temporarily suspending production of the Tundra pickup and Sequoia SUV in the face of dwindling demand.

The Prius will be the second Hybrid built in the United States. Toyota currently assembles the Camry Hybrid alongside standard versions of the model at its plant in Georgetown, Kentucky.
