Israel: Olmert to Visit Egypt on Tuesday
Thursday, June 19, 2008
JERUSALEM Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office says he will pay a one-day visit to Egypt on Tuesday for talks with President Hosni Mubarak.
A statement says the meeting was arranged several weeks ago. That indicates Israel is trying to discourage speculation that the previously unannounced trip could be linked to Egyptian-mediated attempts to win the release of an Israeli soldier held by Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.
Still, Israeli government officials say Olmert's point man on a possible prisoner exchange is also flying to Egypt on Tuesday.
The fate of the soldier is connected to an Egyptian-brokered truce between Israel and Hamas that took effect on Thursday.
