Atlanta City Councilman Says City Needs Fuel Charge for Speeders

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

An Atlanta city councilman wants the city to tack on a $10 to $15 charge for speeders — a fuel charge he says is needed because of record-high gasoline prices.

The nearby town of Holly Springs, Ga., already has enacted a $12 fuel surcharge.

Atlanta Councilman C.T. Martin tells MyFoxAtlanta.com that the charge is needed to offset rising fuel costs, and might help deter some from speeding by hitting their wallets harder.

"We have X-number of police out there working. They use a lot of gas tracking down criminals, and when they come through our courts, we want to apply this sub-charge," Martin said.

"Nobody anticipated a barrel of oil to be where it is today," he added.

Atlanta manages a city fleet of more than 1,500 vehicles.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Holly Springs police chief estimates the fee will generate $19,500 to $26,000 per year, roughly doubling the town's annual revenue from moving violations.

Holly Springs' new fuel fee — which its council approved Monday — will take effect on July 1.
