Police Arrest Mom, Find Baby Missing From California Hospital

Friday, May 16, 2008

Police in New Mexico on Thursday arrested a mother accused of abducting her baby from a California hospital.

Ida Marybel Torres was charged with three counts of felonious child abduction and one count of child endangerment and could face up to eight years in prison if convicted, MyFOXLA.com reports.

Police found Torres at a rest area on Interstate 40, east of Albuquerque, N.M., the ABQJournal.com reports.

Police allege Torres took her 10-month-old son, Alakahi Thompson, from the Children's Hospital of Orange, Calif., on Wednesday night. Alakahi's father has custody of the baby.

He was being treated for possible pneumonia at the time he was taken.

Torres also had two of Alakahi's siblings with her, although it was unclear if they also are considered kidnap victims. They were not identified nor listed in the Amber Alert.
