Coast Guard Ends Search for Missing Lobsterman, Who Wasn't Wearing Life Vest

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

NEW CASTLE, N.H. —  Officials say a Maine lobsterman who disappeared after a fishing boat capsized off the New Hampshire coast was not wearing a life vest.

The Coast Guard ended its search for 46-year-old Christopher Tobey Monday night.

Tobey, his 16-year-old son and another crew member were tossed into the frigid Atlantic on Sunday when their boat capsized. The teen and crewman made it to Duck Island on the Isles of Shoals, and were rescued on Monday.

Officials said the three started swimming together after their boat, Save-A-Buck, capsized. The teen was helping his father swim, but at some point, Tobey went under.

The Coast Guard plans to investigate why the boat capsized.
