May 10, 2008: Fifth-graders Charlie Williamson and Lily Gasperetti struggle to come up with a word at the 2008 National School Scrabble Championships.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. Two hundred Scrabble lovers are meeting in Providence to compete for cash and bragging rights.
The National School Scrabble Championships started Friday and end Saturday. Teams of two from fifth through eighth grades are trying to win as many rounds of the word tile game as they can.
The teams come from as far away as California and Oregon. Twenty-two states and the District of Columbia are represented.
Each team competes in six games. Whoever wins the most games wins the tournament. But if there's a tie, the championship goes to whichever team has the greatest point spread.
The first prize winners will receive $5,000. Second-place winners get $2,000 and third-place winners get $1,000.
