Teen's Wild Drive on School's Athletic Field Sends Hundreds Running for Safety

Thursday, May 08, 2008

CARVER, Mass.  —  A teenager from Carver is undergoing psychiatric evaluation after going on a wild ride with his mother's car that sent hundreds of people scrambling for safety.

Police say 17-year-old George Cowen steered the car on to the Carver High School athletic fields Tuesday night and careened across the grounds at high speeds. The car barely missed hitting students, coaches and spectators gathered for athletic events on the fields.

One parent said it was a miracle that no one was killed or seriously injured.

Cowen was later arrested at his home. According to court records, the teen told police he never intended to hurt anyone and was upset about several things, including his recent transfer to an alternative high school.

He faces a number of charges including assault with a dangerous weapon.
