Man Considers Surgery After 15 Months of Hiccups

Wednesday, May 07, 2008

Christopher Sands has tried everything: hypnotherapy, yoga, reiki, herbal medicine and an oxygen chamber, but nothing has cured the 24-year-old's hiccups, the Daily Mail reported.

Sands, a resident of Lincoln in Lincolnshire, England, has been hiccupping for 15 months and is considering having surgery for the problem.

He has undergone scans of his brain, chest and abdomen, but doctors still don't have a definitive answer as to what is causing his problem, the Web site reported.

Doctors at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Center believe a damaged stomach valve, which also is causing Sands to experience acid reflux, may be to blame.

Surgeons hope to cure Sands' hiccups by constructing a "valve" between his esophagus and stomach, according to the report.

"The heartburn combined with [the hiccups] is really getting to me," Sands told the Daily Mail. "It makes me physically sick. Hopefully, the operation will help."

In 2007, Florida teenager Jennifer Mee battled hiccups for more than five weeks until they finally stopped on their own.
