Body Floats in N.J. Canal, Gnawed by Turtles, for Nearly 24 Hours After Police Got Call

Monday, May 05, 2008

TRENTON, N.J. —  Residents are upset that Trenton police did not find a body floating in a canal for nearly 24 hours after the first report.

Police said they received the call about the body floating in the Delaware & Raritan Canal on Saturday afternoon. But, police say the call was not specific about where the body was and an initial search did not turn it up.

After a second call, searchers found the male body floating in the water on Sunday. Neighbors said a dog and turtles were gnawing on it.

The victim was not immediately identified. Police said the death is suspicious.
