DUI Suspect Flees Accident Into Sewer, Leads Police on Underground Chase

Wednesday, April 23, 2008

FINDLAY, Ohio —  A suspected drunken driver looking for an escape route from police in Findlay tried to find it in the city's storm sewer system.

The chase ensued Tuesday after a school bus hit a car driven by 28-year-old Chad Nye of Findlay, according to police Lt. Sean Young.

Police say Nye ran into an open storm-drainage pipe. Officers with flashlights went into the sewer after Nye, chasing him in 6-inch deep water.

He was caught after he emerged from a manhole three blocks away, soaking wet and exhausted.

Nye is charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a suspended license, according to police reports.
