German Mother Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Killing 8 of Her Babies

Monday, April 07, 2008

FRANKFURT AN DER ODER, Germany  —  A court has ruled that a German woman convicted of killing eight of her infants must serve the maximum 15 years in prison.

Forty-one-year-old Sabine Hilschenz was convicted in 2006 of killing eight of her newborn babies and burying them in flower pots and a fish tank in the garden of her parents' home near the German-Polish border.

She was convicted of manslaughter. However, a federal court ordered judges in Frankfurt an der Oder to reconsider her 15-year prison sentence. It said the lower court had not sufficiently considered the possibility of diminished capacity.

The state court says in its ruling Monday that it found no grounds for the claim.
