Reports: Elizabeth Hurley, Husband Paid Maid $3 an Hour, Sometimes Less

Thursday, February 21, 2008

Elizabeth Hurley and her wealthy Indian businessman husband paid their ex-maid about $3 an hour and sometimes even less, according to Britain's Mirror and Daily Mail.

Violet D’Souza claims she worked up to 19 hours a day and sometimes seven days a week in Hurley and Arun Nayar’s London home.

D'Souza reportedly babysat, cooked and cleaned for the uber-rich couple, making between $2.33 and $3.10 an hour for as many as 70 hours of work a week — far less than the British minimum wage of $10.71. They also allegedly paid her in the Indian currency of rupees.

D’Souza was reportedly set to tell her story before an employment tribunal Thursday but abruptly withdrew her case after accepting a five-figure settlement Wednesday. The charges were leveled at the couple after they fired D’Souza last summer.

Hurley and Nayar married last March in a secret ceremony. The newlyweds then threw a lavish party in a 15th century castle in Gloucestershire, celebrating their union with celebrity friends.
