Guantanamo Bay Detainees Could Face Charges Over 9/11

Saturday, February 09, 2008

Military prosecutors are close to filing charges against suspected conspirators in the plot that led to thousands of deaths in Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, The New York Times reported.

According to people who have been briefed on the case, the charges would be brought against as many as six detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, according to the report.

Mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, a former senior aid to Usama bin Laden, is expected to be among the six.

Prosecutors were expected to seek the death penalty for Mohammed, an official who was briefed on the case told The New York Times.

Although the charges could be filed soon, a trial could be many months away, according to the report.
