The Breakdown: Sex Both Causes, Cures Headaches

Wednesday, February 06, 2008

Men around the world rejoiced when science proclaimed that sex can cure a headache.

No longer would those dreaded words, "Not tonight, I have a headache," be uttered by haggard housewives.

But it turns out that while having sex may cure some headaches, it can also trigger others, according to a report from ABC News.

In the late 1980's, James Couch, a neurology professor at Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, found that some 61 percent of female migraine sufferers he polled experienced some relief of their symptoms after having sex. This compares to the 60 to 80 percent of those who report some relief from the latest class of migraine drugs called triptans.

But sex can actually trigger a headache in up to 10 percent of people who suffer from migraines, Randolph Evans, clinical professor of neurology at Baylor College of Medicine, told ABC News.

Other headaches triggered by sex include a headache that originates as a dull ache in the head and neck, said Evans.

There's also the orgasmic headache — a severe "explosive" headache that builds just before or during orgasm and can last for several hours afterward.
