Texas Parents Upset After Kids Sent Home From School With Text Messaging Homework

Parents are upset after a Texas middle school math teacher handed out a homework assignment to his sixth-grade class to find out the meaning of some text messaging abbreviations.

Some of the 20 abbreviations translated to "keeping parents clueless" and"nude in front of the computer."

Alicia Byars, the parent of an 11-year-old student in the class at Jackson Middle School, wants the teacher fired.

"I don't understand. I'm actually in shock," Byars said. "Now I'm faced to the situation 'what does this mean, Mommy?'

The school district said it spoke to the teacher, but would not comment on any disciplinary action taken against the teacher.

"He did come away from the district's curriculum to give this activity to those kids," said Sam Buchmeyer, a spokesman for the Grand Prairie School District.

Another parent doesn't think that's good enough.

"He's a teacher, he needs to be held responsible," said Jeff Travis.
