NEW YORK —  While many Americans are undecided about Rep. Gary Condit's involvement in the disappearance of Washington intern Chandra Levy, a clear majority believes the California Democrat is withholding information in the case.

A FOX News/Opinion Dynamics national poll found that 41 percent think Condit was involved with Levy's disappearance. People in the Northeast are more likely to think Condit was involved than those in the rest of the country (53 percent in the Northeast compared to 31 percent in the West).

Fully 68 percent think Condit is not telling everything he knows about Levy's disappearance; only 9 percent think he is telling all.

About half of Americans are optimistic that the case will eventually be solved. Men are more optimistic than women that the country will learn what happened to Chandra (57 percent to 47 percent).

The poll of 900 registered voters has a margin of error of ±3 percent.

Polling was conducted by telephone July 11-12, 2001 in the evenings. The sample is 900 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of ±3 percentage points.
