MEXICO CITY  —  Mexican environmental protection officials found 98 crocodiles that were being kept in the backyard of a home in the Gulf state of Veracruz, authorities said.

The reptiles were found in six small swimming pools at a house in the municipality of Tenozapa in Veracruz after an anonymous caller alerted authorities, Mexico's environmental protection agency said in a news release Monday.

The crocodiles, which ranged in length from 12 inches to 6 feet, are protected by Mexican environmental laws.

Authorities said the owner of the house has five days to present documents showing the origin of the animals.
