July 29, 2007
Our guests this week include:
• Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wis.), Judiciary Committee
• Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), Former Speaker of the House
• Cal Ripken, Former Baltimore Orioles Shortstop
This week: The Senate lashes out at Attorney General Alberto Gonzales for the latest scandal plaguing the troubled Justice Department. Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold is calling for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate whether Gonzales committed perjury for giving misleading statements about the White House terrorist surveillance program and last year's firing of U.S. attorneys. Is an external investigator necessary to get to the bottom of the scandal or do the Democrats merely have a political axe to grind? And, will Gonzales be able to survive this latest scandal? We turn to Sen. Feingold for answers on the Gonzales investigation as well as his latest attempt to censure the president.
Also, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) had some harsh words for the 2008 GOP presidential field this week, saying they lacked answers to the nation's big problems, and called the overall election process “insane” and “pathetic.” Why is he so upset with the process and will he jump into the race in order to offer his solutions to the nation's major challenges. I'll speak with the controversial GOP leader about his latest comments and his next steps.
Plus, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama take real political shots at one another for the first time in the 2008 race, with Clinton painting the Illinois Senator as “naïve” and Obama comparing Clinton to President Bush. Who came out on top? Joining us for the always lively discussion will be our power panel:
• Brit Hume FOX News Washington Managing Editor
• Fred Barnes of the Weekly Standard
• Juan Williams of National Public Radio
• Mara Liasson of National Public Radio
And, while it has been a scandalous week for sports, our Power Player this week is a legendary athlete who helped restore the public's trust in baseball after an equally tumultuous time — former Baltimore Orioles great Cal Ripken. Baseball's 'Iron Man' is set to be inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame this weekend.
