Man Who Sues Dry Cleaners for $54 Million May Have Lost More Than His Pants

Friday, June 15, 2007

Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:

Pants Suit

The judge who is suing the owners of a Washington dry cleaners for $54 million because they allegedly lost his pants — may lose something else — his job.

The Washington Examiner reports D.C.'s chief administrative judge has written to the three-person commission that will decide whether Roy Pearson is reappointed — and said Pearson does not deserve another 10-year term. That reverses his earlier recommendation in favor of Pearson.

A D.C. government source tells the paper: "My sense is that the commission will not reappoint him."

Pearson's job as an administrative law judge pays more than $100,000 a year... but does not pay for his pants.

Edit Please

The religious order founded by Mother Teresa has asked Hillary Clinton to remove a picture of the senator and the late nun from a campaign video.

The Politico reports the head of a politically conservative Catholic group brought the video to the attention of Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity organization.

Joseph Cella of Fidelis called it: "Wholly inappropriate, disrespectful and disturbing that Hillary Clinton shamelessly exploited mother's image as a political tool." Cella says Clinton's support for what he called "abortion on demand in all nine months of pregnancy," is a contrast to Mother Teresa's efforts to protect unborn children.

The Clinton campaign says it has removed the picture from the video.

School Control

The militant Palestinian group Hamas started taking control of local schools immediately after taking power a year ago.

Moderate Palestinians say Hamas is trying to shape the political views of future generations by executing a slow strategy of transforming the secular educational system into an ideological one.

Hamas has focused on removing senior educators aligned with the more moderate Fatah movement — and replacing them with Hamas loyalists.

It also has lifted a ban on private teaching materials to allow greater access to Islamic material, formed its own teachers union, and is pushing female students to pray and wear head scarves.

Hamas officials deny any indoctrination program.

Avoid Spanish Media

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger told a gathering of Hispanic journalists that immigrants should avoid Spanish-speaking media in order to learn English more quickly.

"You've got to turn off the Spanish television set," Schwarzenegger said. "You're just forced to speak English, and that just makes you learn the language faster."

The governor conceded that his statement was politically incorrect and would probably get him in trouble. And he was right.

National Hispanic Media Coalition President Alex Nogales said: "I'm sitting shaking my head not believing that someone would be so naive and 'out of it' that he would say something like that."

Nogales said immigrants need Spanish-language media in order to stay informed and function in America.
