HIGHLAND, Utah —  Jordan Maxwell ran the equivalent of nearly three marathons in 24 hours so poor people can get food.

The 17-year-old, inspired by a teacher at Lone Peak High School, ran all day and night Thursday. By 3 p.m., he'd pounded out 50 miles; by 8 p.m., 65.

And when he finally stopped, as Thursday turned to Friday, Maxwell had logged about 74 miles.

"I'm pretty beat," he said with about four hours to go. "You look at that mountain and you don't think you've moved at all."

With temperatures in the high 80s, Maxwell ran the roads of Utah County to raise money for the Utah Food Bank, occasionally stopping for food and water.

He and his friends were hoping they could raise several thousand dollars but were expecting a smaller amount.

"Next year will be better. People will get inspired," Chelsi Brunt said from Maxwell's support van.

Maxwell's mother, Christie Alger, regularly checked on him and brought fresh supplies.

"I'm so proud of him," she said.
