Congressman Foils Pickpocket in Washington, D.C.

Friday, May 25, 2007

WASHINGTON —  A New Jersey Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen refused to accept the outcome of an alleged mugging on Thursday night when he foiled a pickpocket attempt in Georgetown.

The incident occurred as Frelinghuysen was walking near his D.C. residence around 9:30 p.m. ET. Police say the 61-year-old congressman was approached by a group of young men when he felt someone grab his wallet from behind.

The seven-term Republican ran after the young suspect just as two Metropolitan Police officers were driving by. They helped apprehend the suspect nearby. The search is still continuing for at least one other suspect.

Frelinghuysen, who represents the Morris County, N.J., area was not injured in the incident.
