British Ambassador to Iran Protests Against TV Pictures Showing Captured Sailors

Thursday, March 29, 2007

LONDON —  Britain's ambassador to Tehran lodged an official complaint Thursday against Iran's decision to show footage of a British sailor on Iranian television, the Foreign Office said.

"The British ambassador in Tehran met with Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials to protest about the TV pictures of Leading Seaman Faye Turney," said a Foreign Office spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with department policy.

In the video broadcast Wednesday on Iran's Arab-language satellite channel, Turney said her group had "trespassed" in Iranian waters. The segment showed her wearing a black head scarf, sitting in a room with floral curtains and smoking a cigarette.

The spokesman added that Britain also demanded the "immediate release of all 15 personnel, information about their whereabouts and consular access as a prelude to their release."
