4.2-Magnitude Quake Rattles San Francisco Area

SAN FRANCISCO —  A magnitude 4.2 earthquake that could be felt throughout the Bay Area struck Thursday night, officials said.

The temblor struck 1 mile northeast of Lafayette, the United States Geological Survey Web site said. Residents said it lasted between 10 and 15 seconds.

There were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries, but Bay Area Rapid Transit trains were temporarily stopped, authorities said.
