Commander: Astronaut Arrest Won't Affect Shuttle Mission

Friday, February 16, 2007

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. —  A shuttle commander says the crew of an upcoming space shuttle mission isn't distracted by the recent arrest of a fellow astronaut in Orlando.

At a news conference in Houston yesterday, Shuttle commander Rick Sturckow said the Atlantis space shuttle crew is focused on training.

Astronaut Lisa Nowak had been scheduled to be part of the flight's ground team during their journey to the international space station.

Nowak would have served as a Mission Control communicator, but NASA relieved her of the duty after her arrest this past week.

Authorities say Nowak drove to Orlando to try to murder a woman she believed was a romantic rival.

Nowak is charged with attempted murder, attempted kidnapping and three other crimes.
