Fans from around the world are celebrating the life of Elvis Presley 29 years after his death. Here's a rundown of his career:
Jan. 8, 1935: Born in Tupelo, Miss., to Gladys Love Smith and Vernon Elvis Presley. A twin brother, Jesse Garon, is stillborn.
1945: Elvis sings "Old Shep" at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show in Tupelo and wins second place: $5 and free admission to all the rides.
Dec. 25, 1946: Elvis gets his first guitar, bought for $12.95 at the Tupelo Hardware Company.
1948: Presley family moves to Memphis, Tenn.
1953: Elvis makes his first record for $4 at Sun Studios as a belated birthday gift to his mother.
July 5, 1954: Elvis returns to Sun Studios and records "That's All Right."
Nov. 20, 1955: Elvis signs a recording contract with RCA.
Jan. 27, 1956: RCA releases "Heartbreak Hotel," Elvis' first million-selling record.
Sept. 9, 1956: Elvis appears on the "Ed Sullivan Show" for the first time; he'll make two more appearances.
Nov. 16, 1956: Elvis' first film, "Love Me Tender," premieres in New York.
March 1957: Elvis buys Graceland.
March 25, 1958: Elvis drafted and joins the U.S. Army. A day later his trademark locks are shorn off.
Aug. 14, 1958: Gladys Presley dies of acute hepatitis.
Oct. 1, 1958: Elvis arrives in Germany, where a year later he meets 14-year-old Priscilla Ann Beaulieu.
March 5, 1960: Elvis discharged from the Army.
1960s: Elvis films numerous movie musicals, including "Blue Hawaii" and "Viva Las Vegas."
Aug. 27, 1965: Elvis meets the Beatles and they have a jam session.
May 1, 1967: Elvis and Priscilla marry in a morning wedding in Las Vegas.
Feb. 1, 1968: Lisa Marie Presley is born.
Dec. 3, 1968: "Elvis," the 1968 comeback TV special, airs on NBC, reviving his career.
July 31, 1969: Elvis begins a month-long engagement at the International Hotel in Las Vegas.
December 1970: Elvis meets President Nixon at the White House.
Late 1971: Elvis and Priscilla separate.
Jan. 14, 1973: "Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii — Via Satellite" airs live to several Asian countries and Australia. It is broadcast on NBC April 4.
Oct. 9, 1973: Elvis and Priscilla divorce.
Aug. 17, 1977: Elvis dies at Graceland.
