Explosion in Gaza Kills One, Wounds Two

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip —  A massive explosion on Tuesday demolished a car traveling near the residence of President Mahmoud Abbas, killing at one person and wounding two others, health officials said.

The blast scattered debris and body parts up to 200 yards. It was not known who was traveling in the car, or how many people were inside.

Health officials said the body was burned beyond recognition, adding that the wounded were two bystanders.

Israel has been threatening tough military action in Gaza since a soldier was abducted by Palestinian militants on Sunday.

Witnesses said the car was attacked by an Israeli warplane. But the army, which routinely claims responsibility for airstrikes in Gaza, said it was not involved in the blast.
