ALBANY, N.Y. —  Most state voters believe New York Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton will run for president in 2008, and they say it makes little difference in whether they will support her Senate re-election bid this year, a statewide poll reported Thursday.

The Quinnipiac University Polling Institute found that when it comes to the Senate race, Clinton remains in a strong position as Republican voters are still uncertain whether former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer or Reagan-era Pentagon official Kathleen Troia "KT" McFarland should be the Republican challenger.

Sixty-one percent of New York voters said they believe Clinton, the front-runner in national polls among potential Democratic presidential contenders, will run for the White House. Thirty-percent of New York voters felt she would not run for president in 2008.

For her re-election bid, the possibility she might run for president appeared to be a wash among home-state voters, with 18 percent saying that made it more likely they would support her re-election while 14 percent said that made it less likely. Two-thirds of voters said it didn't make any difference in how they would vote. That is a blow to the Republican party, which has been hammering the point that a presidential run would likely make her an absentee senator in New York.

In possible head-to-head matchups, Clinton topped Spencer, 57 percent to 33 percent, and led McFarland, 58 percent to 31 percent.
