Tennessee Minister's Wife Pleads Not Guilty in Husband's Death

Wednesday, June 14, 2006

SELMER, Tenn.  —  A minister's wife charged murder in her husband's shooting death pleaded not guilty Wednesday and told a judge she wants to be released on bond.

Mary Winkler was charged by a McNairy County grand jury with premeditated murder in the death of Matthew Winkler, pastor of the Fourth Street Church of Christ in Selmer, a small town about 80 miles east of Memphis.

The 32-year-old mother of three has been held without bond since she and her children were found in Alabama on March 23, a day after the shooting. The judge on Wednesday scheduled a bond hearing for June 30.

After the hearing, defense attorney Steve Farese said he is hopeful the judge will grant a reasonable bond.

Investigators have said Mary Winkler admitted shooting her husband but they haven't disclosed a motive.
