'Godfather' Video Game Has Makings of a Hit

Monday, March 20, 2006

Now's your chance to be part of the family.

"The Godfather: The Game" — featuring the faces and voices of much of the original movie cast — hits stores Tuesday.

Originally slated for a holiday release, the hotly anticipated video game, based on Mario Puzo's book and its Hollywood adaptation, takes players deep inside the "Godfather" world.

Set mostly in New York City between 1945 and 1955, you play a young man rising up the Corleone family ranks.

The game opens with the child version of you, watching your father being iced by a rival family. Cut to Don Corleone (Marlon Brando provided some voice-overs for the character before his death), who says, "When the time is right, when you get older, you'll take your revenge."

Flash-forward nine years and you connect with familiar enforcer Luca Brasi — only one of many characters, like Sonny Corleone and Tom Hagen (voiced by role originators James Caan and Robert Duvall) — in Corleone-run Little Italy. From there, you begin a life of extortion, racketeering and contract killing.

Famous for the Madden football franchise, Electronic Arts made "Godfather" its first mature-rated game — profanity and violence are sprinkled throughout.

The game costs $40, or $50 for a "limited edition" version that includes extra footage, and is available for Xbox, PlayStation 2 or PC.

The only downside of "The Godfather" — unless you count the theme song being stuck in your head — is that unless you've got serious gaming skills, there's virtually no way you'll ever complete the game.

Even the game's executive producer, David DeMartini, who's lived nonstop with it for a year and knows every trick in the book, admits he still gets stuck on various missions toward the end.
