Judge Asked to Reconsider Lafave Plea Deal

Wednesday, March 08, 2006

OCALA, Fla. —  Prosecutors asked a judge today to reconsider his rejection of a plea deal for a Tampa teacher accused of having sex with a 14-year-old middle school student.

The judge will decide in the next seven to ten days whether to accept or reject the plea deal entered by Debra Lafave, whose case has gained national attention.

She would avoid prison time under the plea deal. Prosecutors accepted it because the victim doesn't want to testify.

A psychiatrist testified today that if the case does go to trial it would be detrimental to the victim's emotional health if he was forced to testify.

Lafave was charged in 2004 with two counts of lewd and lascivious battery and one count of lewd and lascivious exhibition after she allegedly had sex with the student in Marion County.
