MINNEAPOLIS —  Negotiators for flight attendants said they reached a pay-cut deal with Northwest Airlines Corp. on Wednesday even as the carrier continued talks with the pilot's union.

The deal was announced on the flight attendant's Web site, although full details were not immediately released.

Pilots and flight attendants have both threatened to strike over Northwest's demands for pay cuts and more flexibility in how it staffs its flights. Pilots overwhelmingly authorized a strike on Tuesday.

Northwest is operating under protection of the bankruptcy court.

The flight attendant deal still must be accepted by union leaders and approved by a vote of the 9,700 members of the Professional Flight Attendants Association.

The union said the agreement does not include Northwest's earlier demand to use non-U.S. flight attendants on overseas flights. That proposal had been the core of the union's strike threat.

"Certainly, Northwest management must comprehend the difficult situation this concessionary agreement puts our members in, and as such we hope that they recognize that now they must treat all employees with great respect in order to heal the damage the bankruptcy process has inflicted upon our carrier," PFAA President Guy Meek said in a prepared statement.
